Our Story... What We Do

Pain, addiction, and homelessness are rife in the Downtown East Side Community, yet there is also love, hope, and strength. Residents face daily challenges of basic survival and are in constant transition.

The Vision of Aboriginal Front Door Society is composed of Aboriginal people that are able to walk through life with love, honor, respect, and compassion for all things in creation, including themselves. We address addictions, dependencies, and other issues in a holistic manner using Aboriginal teachings.

Our Community

Aboriginal Front Door Society is a culturally safe, peer-designed non-judgemental place for Aboriginal Peoples their friends, and family in the Downtown East Side.

We create hope and offer support through Aboriginal cultural traditions, caring, and acceptance. We are a meeting place and a drop-in center with a welcoming environment, providing opportunities to learn more about Aboriginal Peoples and Culture.
When necessary, we can also offer other services, such as serving as a crisis center, brokering long-term and specialty trauma counseling, and doing court accompaniments.

Nobody can afford poverty. Poverty is not only socially harmful but from an economic point-of view it is counterproductive. When you are in it, poverty is extremely costly. It will cost you your health and education, your home and job and possibly your life. Poverty is a budget item that requires all of our attention. The Osoyoos Indian Band addresses the cost by creating revenues and jobs. The Aboriginal Front Door Society tackles the issue in Canada's poorest neighbourhood by pro`iding essential services. We support the Aboriginal Front Door Society and encourage you to do the same

54% of the Aboriginal population in Canada lives in urban centres. One of the largest Aboriginal communities congregates here in Vancouver, in the heart of our traditional territory. It is our role as the traditional stewards of this land to act as advocates for Aboriginal people, culture, title and rights. The Aboriginal Front Door Society serves Aboriginal people from across the country and is a voice for the vulnerable, the poor and for the women in the Downtown Eastside. Vancity operates within the traditional territory of the Coast Salish people. We work in partnership with Aboriginal not-for-profit organizations to support community development and independence.
We support the Aboriginal Front Door as the organization provides important services to the urban Aboriginal community of the Downtown Eastside.
