AFDS Food Bank
Aboriginal Front Door Society Food Bank
As a community partner with Greater Vancouver Food Bank, we serve at-risk individuals in the Downtown East Side.
AFDS Food Bank provides food to individuals living in the DTES. We pride ourselves in supplying nutritious food in a respectful and dignified environment. In addition, we believe it is our responsibility to connect our clients to other community services as a means of helping them to become self-sufficient.
As a non-profit, charitable organization, the AFDS Food Bank operates because of donations of money and food. These donations come from individuals, organizations, and corporations. We also benefit from various fundraising efforts. Currently, we receive no core government funding for this program and is run on a volunteer basis.
In working towards our vision of growing our community beyond hunger, the AFDS Food Bank serves as a connection point for our clients to engage with other organizations and services throughout our community that they would not otherwise have access to. We partner with these multiple organizations to bring awareness, education, and advocacy for our clients to help them face life’s greatest challenges. A list of partner organizations can be found here.
Volunteers are essential to our success. We depend on volunteers for many different functions – everything from sorting and distributing food to representing us at community events. Due to our volunteer involvement, we save money on costs and are able to direct more of our donations to provide food.
AFDS Food Bank is run by an elected, volunteer Board of Directors. The Board oversees the Executive Director, staff, and volunteers who manage the day-to-day operation of the food bank.
Food Bank is every Wednesday for AFDS members only from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM. After 11:00 AM it is open to the general public.
At Aboriginal Front Door Society our food bank operates in partnership with the Greator Vancouver Food Bank. We are dedicated to helping DTES residents and first nations peoples with food security. We work at the street level as a welcoming unconditional source of food resources in times of need. Our work is focused on maximizing impact, strengthening local individuals and families, and feeding people in need.
COVID 19 has presented us with a unique challenge and opportunity to feed over 300 people a day. Please join us and show your kind support! thank you!
